The archaeological area of Castiglione di Paludi (11 km away from Iti).

The archaeological findings we are in possess of concern a wide period of time, from IX century B.C. till the Roman age, but date back above all to two different periods: the Iron Age (IX-VIII c. b.C.), to which a series of mortal articles founded in this area in the 1950s can be attributed, and an age situated between the IV and the II centuries B.C., when a series of structural monuments have been made (houses, theatres, walls).

The archaeological area of Sibari (27 km away from Iti).

This is a big city called Sibaris, which was part of the famous Magna Grecia. During the archaeological excavations, which are still going on, only a little part of the ancient city has been discovered, while the rest of it, which in the II b.C. counted more than 100.000 inhabitants, is till now under the soil.

The center of Pietrapaola (4 Km from ITI).

The village of Pietrapaola is famous because of its numberless caves. Very intereseting is also the little church of S. Martino di Canale, where Gioacchino da Fiore, founder of the florense order, died in 1201.

Rossano (5 Km from ITI)

The town is very famous because of the "Codex Purpureus Rossanensis", illuminate gospel dating back to the VI century. This gospel, composed on a purple parchment and kept in the local diocesan museum, is the only copy still existing. In the same museum you can also find a bronze mirror, dating back to 460 B.C.: it is the most important proof of the ancient Greek presence in this land. To be visited also the very ancient hermit caves, situated in the area known as “S. Anna”. But the most predominant is the Byzantine style, represented by many buildings, such as the church of San Marco, Panaghia, Pilerio, Acheropita and others.

Corigliano Calabro (15 KM from ITI).

This town is famous above all because of its ducal castle – with an area of more than 2.000 mq. – a building surrounded by four towers. The building of the castle was ordered by the Normans in 1073, but in the corse of the centuries the castle suffered many alterations till the XIX c.
